Prof. Alberto Spalice

Prof. Alberto Spalice is a Full Professor of Pediatrics and Head of the EEG and Pediatric Neurology Division and Chief of the Pediatric Division within the Department of Pediatrics at the ‘Azienda Policlinico Umberto I, Università “La Sapienza” of Rome, the polyclinic of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery.

As Chair of Pediatrics, Prof. Spalice guides graduates through the preparation and drafting of their thesis papers in medicine and surgery. In addition, he collaborates in the instruction, education and training excercises of the sixth year medical and surgical students in Pediatric Neurology. Other courses Prof. Spalice teaches are an integrative course in pediatric neurophysiology,  the “Degree of Pediatric Nursing,” and the “Master of Pediatric Immunology.”

Prof. Spalice is an active member in the Italian Society of Pediatrics (SIP), the Italian Society of Neuropediatria (SINP), the Italian League Against Epilepsy (LICE), the Italian Association of Neuroradiologia (AINR), the Italian Society of Clinical Neurophysiology, and the Study Group of Pediatrics.

He has participated as a collaborator in numerous research projects including: Research Ministero dell’Università e della Ricerca Scientifica; CNR Projects; and Projects of the Ministry of Health. The Projects of the Ministry of Health include: Oncoematologia and Pediatric Gastroenterology, Molecular Genetics of Defects in Migration Neuronal;  Neurological Complications of the Drugs (Interleukin-2) in Acute Leukemias; and Development and Function of the Nervous System Migration Disorder. He also researches rare diseases in childhood, including clinical studies related to genetics, metabolics and neuroradiology.

His research encompasses 348 publications. Of these, 183 are published in international journals and 52 are published in national journals. In addition, 105 abstracts were presented at national conferences and 58 abstracts were presented at international conferences.

Since 2011, Prof. Spalice is a leading specialist treating PANS/PANDAS patients in Italy, and the most active collaborator with PANDAS Italian ODV, the main parent organization for PANS/PANDAS in Italy. He has participated in all major projects and international conferences organizaed by the association since 2014. He has published 10 works on PANS PANDAS in scientific publications and is collaborating in the Imood protein study on OCD led by Prof. Fulvio D’Acquisto. He is creating a network of PANS/PANDAS specialists comprising colleagues, scientific societies and neuropsychologists, psychotherapists and school professionals in Italy.
